What should we do if the spring-planted summer-overwintering shiitake logs fail to form tubercles?

The shiitake logs have started to shrink before even forming tubercles. This is mainly due to high temperatures in the mycelium cultivation shed combined with excessive dryness inside the shed.

Can such shiitake logs be punctured with small holes? They cannot.

Because the shiitake logs themselves are already quite dry and have started to shrink without forming tubercles, puncturing them with small holes will make them even drier. This will not only hinder the formation of tubercles but also disrupt the color transformation process, and the logs may easily become “iron-skinned logs.” Therefore, the best approach now is to promptly transfer the shiitake logs from the mycelium cultivation shed to the fruiting shed. This way, the temperature of the shiitake logs can drop at night, ventilation is better, and there is natural humidity. Gradually, the mycelium will regain activity, the shiitake logs will harden, tubercles will form slowly, and large holes can be punctured later.

If your shiitake logs can normally form tubercles in the mycelium cultivation shed, you can puncture the large holes first before transferring them to the fruiting shed.
