What are the key conditions for the growth of Maitake mushrooms? -2
4. Light
During the mycelial growth stage, maitake has low light requirements. Diffused light (15–50 lux) is beneficial for mycelial development. Excessively strong light inhibits mycelial growth, while complete darkness may cause over-thickening of the mycelium, forming a “mycelial mat.”
For primordium initiation, a certain amount of diffused light is necessary. The formation of primordia and development of fruiting bodies requires relatively stronger diffused light, in the range of 200–500 lux.
During the fruiting stage, stronger diffused light results in deeper cap color, stronger aroma, and higher quality. Conversely, insufficient light leads to pale caps, poor quality, and even malformed fruiting bodies due to disrupted differentiation.
5. Oxygen
In the wild, maitake often grows in humus-rich sandy soil, usually containing small gravel and coarse sand particles. This indicates that both the mycelial development stage and the fruiting body growth stage require sufficient oxygen.
In artificial cultivation, ventilation should be increased. When preparing the substrate, a certain amount of coarse sawdust should be added to improve internal oxygen levels, ensuring robust mycelial growth.
Both mycelium and fruiting body development require fresh air. Oxygen demand during the mycelial growth stage is less than during fruiting, but oxygen deficiency must be avoided. Regular ventilation is needed to keep the air fresh; otherwise, the mycelium will gradually weaken, shortening its lifespan. In severe hypoxia, mycelial growth will be inhibited.
6.pH
In most wild maitake substrates, the pH range for mycelial growth is between 5.2 and 6.8. During the fruiting body growth stage, the pH range is between 5.5 and 6.2.For artificially prepared substrates, the pH should be controlled between 5.5 and 6.5 (the pH will drop slightly after colonization).
