How should spring-planted shiitake logs be managed after large holes are punctured?
The timing for puncturing large holes in spring-planted shiitake logs is generally in April and May. If the large holes are punctured too late when the temperature is high, coupled with the fact that the shiitake logs themselves generate relatively high heat right after the large holes are punctured, the shiitake logs are prone to leaking black water or getting burned, which affects shiitake fruiting.
Since the suitable period for mycelium cultivation in spring is relatively short and the temperature rises gradually, after puncturing large holes in spring-planted shiitake logs, it is first necessary to increase ventilation to allow the shiitake logs to shrink, make the fungal skin harden, and then let the shiitake logs transform color gradually. This way, the mycelium has strong activity and is less likely to leak black water.
If the ventilation is insufficient after puncturing large holes, the shiitake logs will become soft. Once exposed to high temperature, the logs are prone to leak black water, which can also corrode the fungal skin and cause the shiitake logs to rot.
Furthermore, as the temperature rises higher and higher in spring, the air humidity will also increase, and the oxygen content in the air will decrease. This makes it increasingly difficult for shiitake logs to shrink. Therefore, before the temperature rises completely, it is necessary to first increase ventilation to let the shiitake logs shrink, and then allow them to gradually transform color. This not only prevents black water leakage but also effectively avoids the risk of over-summering.
