Applications and advantages of branch spawn
Applications and advantages of branch spawn

Branch spawn is widely used in bag-type cultivation of mushrooms like oyster mushrooms and king oyster mushrooms. The branch spawn is made from softwood species like poplar, processed into branches measuring 7 mm x 7 mm x (120–165) mm. Essentially, the branches serve as a carrier for the spawn, where mycelium is allowed to grow and wrap around the surface of the branches.
During inoculation, the branches are placed directly into sterilized cultivation bags that have pre-made inoculation holes. This method offers several advantages, including fast inoculation speed, quick mycelium recovery, 3D radial spread of the mycelium inside the cultivation bag, shortened cultivation time, and improved synchronization of fruiting. However, with the breakthrough in liquid spawn technology, large enterprises no longer use branch spawn due to its high cost and low efficiency. Branch spawn is now mostly used in small-scale, seasonal cultivation (e.g., for oyster mushrooms).
